Neck Pain Treatments

Neck pain can interfere with your ability to perform your usual daily activities. It can also make sleeping and even standing uncomfortable. To get relief you can count on Dr. Laura Russo of Suwanee Family Chiropractic in Suwanee, GA to have the treatments you need.

The neck is a vital part of your anatomy. It connects your head and your torso as well as your brain and the rest of your body. Without it, there is no way that the brain can send messages to the extremities. Your neck is also vital to your breathing, swallowing, and voice. Misalignment in the neck causes pain not only in the neck, but in other body parts as well.

Anatomy of the neck

The neck has multiple complex system structures. It has 7 cervical vertebrae, the spinal cord, and 6 discs to cushion between the vertebrae. The spine is surrounded by ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves. Cervical nerves help carry messages from the brain to the spine and on to the other upper limbs. The spinal column protects the spinal cord. The neck allows it to bend forward, backwards and sideways, and to twist left to right. All this movement makes it susceptible to injury.

Causes of neck pain

Many things can cause neck pain. It can come from the nerves, the bones, the tendons, muscles, or ligaments. All of them can cause pain. Some triggers are wear and tear as you age, arthritis, stenosis, trauma from an accident, degeneration of the disc, bone spurs, muscle inflammation, whiplash, poor posture, or just sleeping in an awkward position.

Treatment for neck pain

The treatment for neck pain will depend on what the cause is. For pinched nerves resulting from any of the above causes, manual manipulation to get the neck back into alignment is good therapy to apply. This may be used in combination with massage therapy, which helps to relax the patient and allow the manipulation to provide the maximum result. Flexion-distraction therapy is manipulation performed on a segmented table that allows the spine to stretch and helps relieve neck and back pain. If the disc is involved, then spinal decompression allows the spine to be stretched to allow the disc to return to the proper place.

Physical therapy along with stretches and exercises can help patients to not only get better but stay well.
